If you follow me on social media, you probably figured out by now the I love to cook…my father taught me. We weren’t the traditional (back in the day traditional) family where mom cooked. Wait, let me start from the beginning.
My dad is a military man. Hard ass. I am first born, yet not a boy. He raised me to be tough. I remember him telling me that if you let people know too much about you, they can use it against you. Name, Rank and Serial Number–that’s it. It may allege to why I am single but I will save that story for later.
Anyway, he taught me how to cook which is so opposite of his military personae–go figure. Since he was such a hard ass, I guess that was his way of showing us he loved us. Over the years I would watch him and/or he would try to give me the recipe for something. Now he cooks by feel so it is all estimated. In the past 10 yrs I would say he has cooked less and less. Within the past year, nothing at all. He has shut down. My mother has had to to assume that role (not that she burns water) and I admire her for doing that. So whenever we cook, his comments are always.. “Not bad” “It’s edible” or the famous “when you’re hungry you eat anything.”
This past weekend I went home and I cooked for them making dinners that they can freeze the leftovers and desserts. The last night I was there, I prepped lasagne which was my dad’s specialty however, it was not his recipe– I have made up my own. Having to go back to Maui, I left instructions on how to bake it. My mother called me that night and said the lasagne was soo delicious! As they were eating my dad took a bite and said, ” she is a good cook.” I know that he couldn’t say it to my face–yet it has to be one of the best compliments ever in my life.
